Arachne Dearest

Dimensions: H90” x W58”
Year Created: 2019
Media: steel power rack, barbell, paracord, barbell, foam

Installation at University of Wisconsin Parkside

Engaging greek mythology in title, Arachne Dearest suggests a shrine to individual devotion and sacrifice (highlighting micro-histories versus the more traditional heroic conquests). For instance, Arachne’s transformation into a spider after out-weaving the goddess Athena. Textile is inherently connected to stories of creation — these weightlifting “cages” carry obsessively knotted macrame designed based on volleyball charts — scoring the labor of bodies in space. By tying and knotting, I create moments that are precariously held together int he way that myths change depending on context.

Arachne Dearest

Dimensions: 6 x 6ft circle
Year Created: 2019
Media: Athletic crew socks, resin, wood

Installation at University of Wisconsin Parkside

I distort the seriousness of myth to accommodate humor through my use of materials (like athletic socks). Adding humor and abjection to weighty references strategically undermines a seemingly authoritative installation — suggesting an anti-monument.
